I'm getting slightly frustrated how little is expected out of me. Don't complicate me unless I deserve it.
On a somewhat releated note, check out our discrimination ratios. The first is the spectrum that we get. In order to be a good SNM (Special Nuclear Material) detector it needs to be able to detect 1 in 1000 neutrons emitted from the source (which can be quite hard, since the source would emit them isotropically - think of the solid angle)
The second shows the count rate per source neutron, we are only a factor of 10 off (which can be adjusted by making the detector area larger -> solid angle). This is modeled for our irridiator, not for the DHS application. The LLD (lower level discriminator) is essentially a voltage gate - voltages higher than some threshold LLD will be allowed through to the Multi Channel Analyzer (MCA). The LLD can be thought of as a channel number threshold.
The final plot shows the neutron gamma discrimination. For DHS we need to be able to discriminate 1 in a million (can't have any false alarms), and we are about 5 in 10,000.
Not to shabby, not to shabby.
